Fly Fishing Small Streams for Pike and Smallies

1439 ratings | 140820 views
Went out to a new section of the river in hopes of catching some big pike. Had a great day and landed some nice fish. Still getting the hang of the fly rod, but I'm quickly learning to love it and becoming much more comfortable using it. Fly rod: 9' 8wt Orvis Clearwater rod Reel: Waterworks‑Lamson Liquid Fly Reel

A lot of people are gonna tell you a lot of things. You're catching fish, enough said. My casting is ugly but I taught myself on smaller streams with much tighter cover and I figured out how to put the fly where I want regardless.

Really love your vids. Beautiful streams you fish. I fish for pike in the Baltic Sea, Finnish archipelago. Same flies same gear apply if you ever should visit 😉 My dream is catching a muskie.. 😁 It's good to dream. Tight lines! 🙂

Good lord I love stream fishing. This is a simply amazing fishing place and environment.
Jesey Gonder (7 months ago)
Hey buddy good content...but wanted to tell you what kills the fish is putting your first gets in their gills like that. It messes up their gills plates and oxygen intake. If you release the fish don't put your fingers in their gills plates
Jonathan Gutierrez (2 months ago)
@10.000 subs with 0 minecraft Let’s Play’s actually you are wrong
Jesey Gonder it really doesn’t aslong as you don’t grab in the red part of their gills. It’s a common thing to grab a pike by the gills so do your research first
Luke Hollingsworth (8 months ago)
Where are you fishing?

Is this the Rogue River?
Judd Fuller (11 months ago)
Nicely done, Duder....that simple stripping technique worked; gonna try that on my local creeks...a bit slower than I usually do, so maybe that change will result in more fish! Cheers.
Misqus (11 months ago)
I like how your small stream is a solid fly fishing river here xD
James Maloney (11 months ago)
Wow. Good job man!
Austin France (1 year ago)
How to fly fish. Change fly 400 times. Finally figure out which fly they are biting. Get fly caught in tree. Hook fish so small you don’t notice till it flies off on back cast.

I never use the reel?lol I love the feeling of hand lining fish. The only time I go to the reel is on my 13 weight for tarpon.

Don't listen to the fly fishing snobs fly fishing is easy the fish will get you on the real if it's big enough I see a lot of bullshit comments from people that don't do a lot of fly fishing keep up the good work
Joseph Parsons (1 year ago)
Catch and release is great n all. But keep your hands out of the gills man.
Logan Kitchen (1 year ago)
Dude, I love these videos. If I ever get out to that area (I'm in Utah) I'll ask ya for some tips. Also, you should really get a net. There are cheap ones and you would have a lot fewer cuts on the fingers with one. Haha.
vibratingstring (1 year ago)
I'm guessing you are using Sci Anglers "sharkskin" tropical line. The fly in the tree made me chuckle in sympathy. That's my life right there. Over a good pool. The question then becomes, "do I sacrifice that fly so that I can keep fishing here?"
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
This is SA Titan Taper fly line, really good for turning over bigger pike flies. Sure does suck getting stuck in trees..
vibratingstring (1 year ago)
I don't know what the obsession with getting the fish on the reel is. It aint' a tarpon. Simple rule. If the fish is pulling hard enough to "pull drag" then you need to get it on the reel. IF not, don't bother. the act of "putting it on the reel" is a god opportunity for the fish to get off the hook as you pay more attention to reeling and less to managing the load.

do you recommend the 8wt rod for fish this size?? I'm thinking about getting into fly fishing, just wondering if you had any recommendations on type of rod/reel :) enjoying your vids!
Jason Mullins (1 year ago)
An 8 will work and if you are new to fly fishing I would not spend a lot....but, I would probably get something with a good warranty.
Rice Crum (1 year ago)
Really nice pike I left a 👎👎👎

Dennis Estrada (1 year ago)
The fish will let you know whether you should put your line on the reel.

nice catch!
SeemsLikeSomething (1 year ago)
Great video looks fun! Anyone else in comments using a st croix imperial? I’ve got a 7wt paired with an Allen kraken. Not digging the line I’ve got though. Seems mismatched. Was curious if anyone else thinks the imperial requires a higher wt line to load properly? I was thinking maybe some rio gold in 8wt. Any suggestions?

Juan Ignacio Maffi (1 year ago)
Don' t take the fish from the gills if you are going to return it because you can kill it. Nice video!
SeemsLikeSomething (1 year ago)
Juan Ignacio Maffi Pike are resilient and can be picked up easily by sliding your fingers under the gill plate and along a meshy area toward their “chin”. It won’t hurt them.
Diallo Morris (1 year ago)
very nice
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
I'm glad you liked it!
New to fly fishing, is your line tapered??
If you don't mind me asking what was your but leader weight
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
Yes, I use a 20lb tapered flourocarbon leader with a wire trace at the end.

Stumbled on this video. Not many quality fishing videos here on YouTube. Plenty of good tying videos, but again, not many fishing. Awesome job young man!!!

What size is the rod ?
I hope this isn’t lost in the comment swarm, but I would love to show you some of my local waters and collaborate getting some Muskie or wild trout on the fly. Thanks and tight lines.

Your a badass
Frank Aylward Jr (1 year ago)
Your negativity about catching “small” pike is a major turn off. It’s impressive to watch you fish but your mindset is just off. You can’t catch your PB everyday.. I say this with the best intentions and hope it helps you or others. Fishing in general is a leisure activity/sport in itself. Catching fish regardless of the size or type makes it exciting (at least for a few moments), grabbing a new pb or a “toad”is down right exhilarating.
SeemsLikeSomething (1 year ago)
Frank Aylward Jr Everybody has their own objective. There’s no reason to impose yours onto others. I’m like you, and enjoy fishing for what it is, but sometimes chasing the big ones can be enjoyable too. Anyways, just saying, there’s really nothing to criticize here.
M.O.S (1 year ago)
never underestimate small stream ;) there may be beast in it. I have seen 1kg persh in smaller stream or should i say ditch
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
Small streams are my favorite! I recently caught a 40 inch pike out of one just like this.

When a pike bites or any fish bites pull up short but fast and reel to your right for side pressure to tire your fish out

Im also live in Michigan and fly fish (Orvis gear). I'm not sure where in Michigan you live but I can certainly meet up with you at some nice spots for mousing big brown trout in the Au Sable and mid size creeks in the lower peninsula! It would be a blast man. Let me know if your interested.

How many times are you going to say LITTLE lol 😂
TheGaming Boii (1 year ago)
Also I subbed and liked 👍
TheGaming Boii (1 year ago)
If you retrieve the fly slowly you might catch bigger fish because you were retrieving fast and you were only catching small fish
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
It's just the river. I've fished it for years and use to catch a good number of 30+ inchers but the last year I've just been catching a lot smaller of fish in general. I still get the occasional 30+ though.

Great video Josh. You have a talent that allows the viewer to feel like I'm right there fishing with ya. Thanks for the entertainment, keep up the good work.
Steve Gillespie (1 year ago)
Nice video, do you have any videos where you talk about the setup that you're using in regards to leader, tippet, knot, wire-bite, etc? Thanks!
Peelindrag (1 year ago)
Not yet, I'm still very new to fly fishing for pike so I'm experimenting and figuring out what works best for me. Right now its just a 20lb RIO pike leader that comes with a wire trace at the end. The wire trace is what I'm still trying to figure out. The one I am using doesn't have the durability I'd like, but it still works.
